For those that couldn’t make it last night….
We had our June SPARKcon meeting last night at and were able to get caught up on some details pertaining to each spark.
Billie Karel who is one the driving forces behind the concept of giveSPARK relayed her ideas on how to best organize their component. The structure of giveSPARK is still a bit undefined. Billie and Heather Yondo’s idea was that giveSPARK would somehow be adopted into an existing spark as an additional component. They would raise money and then decide where to donate it. Further discussion with last night’s group offered the idea of bringing various charities and non-profits together to showcase and celebrate what it is that each one does for the community. Maybe even block off some time at the Urban Design Center to have a lecture and discussion on the subject.
Ty offered up his latest bazaarSPARK intel. He along with other supporters like Garrett French are shooting to incorporate the downtown Farmers Market again, but also bring in the Crafter’s flea market, Hand Maidens, and anyone who might create little trinkets in their living room! Ty is still working on solidifying the permitting issue with different types of vendors, but is hoping that it can be set up so that each vendor would pay for own permit and file their own paperwork. They are looking to hold the bazaar on Saturday from 10-5. Tentative meetings are on Thursdays around 6pm, but you should check with Ty just to be sure! ty@gamilacompany.com
Santos Flores also came out last night to become more involved with danceSPARK. He is envisioning having open drum circles mixed with house music accompanied by hoola-hoopers, capoeira dancers, and any others willing to join in. We also learned from him that their is a group that meets in Pullen Park on Wednesday nights at 6pm to do just this! I think Aly is headed out there for sure tonight. We will be linking Santos up with Katherine and Carson to collaborate.
Isaac took the reins next and explained all the fashionSPARK has in the works. Among the fundraising events and PR opportunities, they have also created a timeline for calls to go out and deadlines to be met in order to get the designers and stylists working together much sooner.
Lea Peace of yogaSPARK talked about all the plans she has and all the different organizations that she is reaching out to in order to make yogaSPARK a very diverse and exciting event for SPARKcon. One idea that came out was to somehow tie groundSPARK into yogaSPARK by having the gS artists drawing mandala’s on the street and have it be a cool seg-way into yogaSPARK!
Gab Smith updated us on grafSPARK and the construction that will be happening for the graf towers to be painted. She is reaching out to architecture based builders to volunteer to have the project complete by August 1.
Lorrie Guess spoke up storySPARK. They had their last meeting a couple of weeks ago and had quite a turn out. Paul Friedrich offered the idea of having Onion Head Monster story boards available for kids to kind of fill in the blanks and create their own Onion Head Monster adventure! They also suggested and are looking into securing professional story tellers to come out. They are toying around with the idea of storySPARK after dark, a display of erotic stories possibly accompanied by dancers? Sounds cool! Somehow the subject of David Sedaris came up, and whether we could convince to come home to be a part of this little shindig. Come on, his new book is called “When You Are Engulfed in Flames.” It’s almost a no-brainer! But we cannot set him on fire Ty, sorry.
