ideaSPARK meeting 6/15/09

From Janet:

Sparkers present: Todd Delk, Kevin Grealey, Aly Khalifa, David Millsaps, Janet Stracke, Jerry Stracke
Also: Megan Wood, new Sparker interested in developing a GameSpark/GamingSpark, and Kelly Stracke, New Sparker interested in FilmSpark. Megan and Kelly joined the IdeaSpark group to hear more about SparkCon workings and to network with the rest of us on their ideas.

After a brief discussion/explanation of past IdeaSpark work and philosophy of SparkCon and its reach in the community(ies), we returned to the topics below.

VENUE
Additionals ideas were offered – Top Deck of Parking Garage, Bicentennial Mall, NC Museum of Natural Science, Museum of History, The Hive, Fayetteville Street.  The street suggestion would require SparkCon to extend it’s street permit to one more night, which would have to be pitched to the City. Also, the choice of Vintage 21 may not be viable due to (Aly, how do we phrase this…intolerance?  Of what?)

SPEAKER
Kevin said he would continue to work the option of Bob Young (LuLu, Red Hat) building on David’s recall that at the LuLu’s building open house, Young seemed quite interested in furthering the success of SparkCon.

CRITERIA
Kevin offered to write the call request for IdeaSpark. The format of one slide and 40 word or less description of the project was agreeable to the group.

RATING
We discussed how, once received, the proposals would be narrowed down to the final 11-14.  It was agreed the process for choosing the final group could be decided after the July deadline for submissions. We can see at that time the number and types of proposals.

David will contact and work with Rob Ruchte to design/build the online voting tool for the SparkCon website.  This voting tool would be used by the SparkCon Community to narrow the proposals if we receive a large number of them.

SUPPORT
Todd expressed interest in increasing the support for the IdeaSpark proposals by following up the initial presentations with support charrette/s, on Saturday perhaps.

There was also discussion of offering additional support to presenters if the need arises. Examples included technical support for Keynote/Powerpoint, how to fine tune the message of the presentation, word-smithing the proposal.

I am pretty sure I will be moving forward with InteractiveSPARK.

Thanks for your help and guidance,
    Megan Wood

Another idea for a keynote speaker could be Adam Bly, editor-in-chief for Seed magazine. http://seedmediagroup.com/about/team/adam-bly/
They cosponsored an amazing exhibition at the MoMA called Design and the Elastic Mind (http://www.moma.org/interactives/exhibitions/2008/elasticmind/)
The magazine would be some potentially good coverage of the event too.
