musicSPARK meeting notes 6/15/09

Hi everyone,

I wasn’t at the first meeting, but attended the small group meeting last Wednesday and the larger meeting yesterday evening. I jotted down some notes from yesterday’s meeting, and wanted to give everyone the update.

First, however, we are having another individual meeting tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 6pm at Humble Pie. This will not be a long meeting, lasting at most an hour. Hope to see you there, and apologies for the late notice!

One of the more immediate points we need to address is the call for work:

- Ann Marie has offered to handle working on the actual form, which we’re going to try and hash out by the end of this week. If anyone has anything that they want included on the form (and are worried will be neglected) please send her a quick note (ambaum@cherrymodern.com). Otherwise we’ll use last year’s form as an example and work from there including the basics (Name, contact info, disclaimers, etc).

- It seems that the most space-effective way to handle music submissions is in cd form. Aly had said he could obtain an email address that would hold 1GB of music, but that would fill up too quickly and not allow for multiple songs per group, which seems like it would make for a better assessment. Visual Art Exchange said they would be willing to collect the materials.

- The identifying genres that we briefly and quickly discussed yesterday were as follows:

Rock and Roll, Hip Hop, R&B, Modern Country, Bluegrass, Soul, Gospel, Reggae, Indie, Classical, Theatrical, and Electronic

We know that doesn’t cover everything, but for the sake of our sanity I think that we should have those as options, and then a line for them to write-in a more specific modifier.

- I am going to get in touch with Allison Beale, the fashionSpark coordinator, and get her input for the portion of the form asking whether the bands will be ok with their music playing for the fashion show.

Aly mentioned that Greg Ettenson was the contact for the local venues last year, so I think that we should keep with that this year if he’s ok with that (obviously if he needs any help, we’ll rally as needed). Then, as for the venues coordinating with specific bands, I’m assuming that Greg would have some good insight into how to best go about that, while integrating our call for work in some fashion.

Otherwise, we briefly talked about having people playing on the sidewalks/busking as well (Aly mentioned the need for permits, which we’ll discuss looking into – anyone interested in tackling that?). We also talked about having local restaurants/stores maybe doing a local music happy hour the week leading into sparkCon.

I think that mostly covers the recap!

If anyone has anything to add/questions/etc totally throw it out there, as you most likely have more experience with this than I do

City Council Invitation

As per tradition, we will be formally inviting the Mayor and City Council to join us for SPARKcon at their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday. The meeting starts at 1 pm. We are not scheduled to speak until 2 pm, but they may shift the schedule forward for us. Wear your SPARKcon shirts and represent!

General Meeting Reminder!

Welcome Back! I trust that everyone had a great 4th of July weekend.

We will be holding our next General SPARKcon Meeting tomorrow night
( Tuesday July 8 ) at 6 pm at Designbox.

We will be bringing the group up to speed on general logistics and learning what each SPARK component has planned.

May 13 General Meeting Notes

GroundSpark
Scheduled to start Friday 3pm and will end Sat 7pm
400 artists expected, will program 1 stage, and will have a First Aid tent. Efforts also fro working with Marbles Museum and/or YouthSpark.

MusicSpark
Chico taking one venue at Riviera.
Bugfest will program their stage Sat until 9pm.
Steve Popson suggested getting in touch with Musicmaker. He will also contact Paul Siler to see if he has any interest.
Band Together was another suggestion.

BugSpark / BugFest
Jeff and Steve came from the Museum of Natural Sciences to fill us in about BugFest.
Bugfest is a giant deal: 20,000 people from 9 am to 9 pm with a main stage and includes eating bugs.
Since they intend to close down Edenton and take over half of the Capital, the suggestion was that SparkCon connect directly to it by taking over the other half of the Capital and some of Fayetteville Street. This could make for a really nice transition for pedestrians.

FashionSpark
Allison Beale has taken the reins and already made a lot of strides. Last year’s designers have been contacted and sent the FashionSpark footage up on the main site. 3 designers are already signed up.
Event is Friday at 8 pm on the main stage (main stage location TBD)
Marbles Museum is already reserved for FashionSpark on that Friday by Pam Hartley.
Bruce deBoer has requested being involved for photography. Alex Mengle for Videography.

StorySpark
Greg Behr and Billy Warden expressed their mission to “Celebrate Storytelling” on a variety of venues across town. They are making great progress and were encouraged to “build density” as much as possible, and to take a portion of the main stage on Saturday night. Recommendations included tapping SparkConners Stammer, using the City Museum to frame Oral Histories, and possibly work with local author Lee Smith.

GrafSpark
Organizer Matt Currin was not present but Gab Smith spoke for him. They are waiting for avenue to be selected. They plan to reach out beyond their own personal network and bring in new faces to the group. Paul Friedrich mught check into getting the Barnstormers out to the event.

YogaSpark
Lea Peace and Carsen Efivo presented their vision for a comprehensive weekend of free yoga and meditation. 30 people are in the group from 5 studios. Green space would be ideal – whether on the Capitol grounds or in Moore Square. They meet @ Helios Thursdays at 2 pm. SparkCon also coincides with International Peace Day.

SparkBazaar
Ty Beddingfield has interest building amongst various groups. THe Bazaar will require tents – which could work fine on Fayetteville Street. Ty wants more food involved this time.

DanceSpark
Katherine Ferrier discussed interest in starting this component. Ideas included having performances in various venues around town or evn having dancing tour guides. A performance scavenger hunt might be involved somehow. Schizophrenic Octopus should be connected with Katherine for connecting the breakdancing element. They are in search of good venues for dance.

GiveSpark
Heather Yandow presented a vision for combining all the sparks with an element of charitable giving. She also suggest a 1 hour workshop on a creative angle on collectively giving.

GourmetSpark
Not many updates here. Local breweries were suggested.

IdeaSpark
Heather Hesketh and Steve Champeon presented a concept for rethinking IdeaSpark and integrating with the tech crowd by working in other conferences like BarCamp and FooCamp models. An essential part is getting participants to hang out more – with things like lunch. A main focus will be social entrepeneurship.

GoSpark
Hopefully we will find someone to integrate various transportation modes for getting around SparkCon.

HealthSpark
Maurice wants this to be active but could not attend this week.
